학교소개(Intro)
뉴스쿨은 미국 뉴욕 주 뉴욕에 있는 사립 종합대학교다. 세계 최고의 명성을 자랑하는 디자인 스쿨 ‘파슨스 디자인 스쿨(Parsons The New School for Design)’이 이 학교에 속해 있다. 한국의 수많은 유명 디자이너들이 이 학교에서 공부를 한 것으로 유명하다. 뉴스쿨은 1919년 ‘현존하는 질서에 대한 편견 없는 이해’를 목적으로 지식인들이 모여 처음 설립했다. 초창기 뉴스쿨은 ‘사회 연구를 위한 뉴스쿨(New School for Social Research)’이라는 이름으로 널리 알려졌다. 뉴스쿨 설립에 참여한 인물들은 철학자 겸 경제학자 앨빈 존슨(Alvin Johnson, 1874~1971), 역사학자 찰스 오스틴 비어드(Charles Austin Beard, 1874~1948), 경제학자 소스타인 베블렌(Thorstein Veblen, 1857~1929), 역사학자 제임스 하비 로빈슨(James Harvey Robinson, 1863~1936), 철학자 존 듀이(John Dewey, 1859~1952) 등 당대의 석학들이었다. 특히 초창기 교수진 가운데 상당수가 나치의 박해를 피해 미국으로 온 유대인들로 채워졌다. 1997년 학교 이름을 뉴스쿨 대학교(New School University)로 바꿨다. 1970년 파슨스 디자인 스쿨을 합병했다. 2005년부터 지금의 뉴스쿨을 정식 이름으로 사용하기 시작했다.
뉴스쿨은 파슨스 디자인 스쿨, 사회연구대학, 유진랑 교양과목대학(Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts), 매네스 음악대학(Mannes College The New School for Music), 재즈·현대음악대학(The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music), 드라마 대학, 공공고용대학 등 7개 단과대학으로 구성돼 있다. 미술관, 사진박물관, TV스튜디오 등의 부속 시설을 운영한다.
The third conservatory in the New York City triumvirate offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in classical music performance, voice and composition at Mannes on the Upper West Side, and jazz at the New School in Greenwich Village. The New School is a consortium of colleges that also includes Parsons. Founded in 1916, Mannes joined the New School consortium in 1989. The classical music program includes 314 undergraduates and grad students, and the faculty includes members of the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera, as well as some of the preeminent composers of the day. The New School for jazz and contemporary music offers bachelor's degrees.
